Privacy Scavenger Hunt

Dose Snapchat really disappear forever?

  • In this article it talks about a FTC consent order with Snapchat due to a claim by Snapchat stating that pictures and videos would "disappear forever". However, the images can and are being retrieved by others. Now Snapchat is subjected to a 20 year privacy audit under the consent order placed by the FTC.
  • I agree with this consent order, if a company claims and sells their product on the claim of it being private and that once a picture or video is played for the duration that it is set at, that it should in return disappear forever, with out anyone being able to access or retrieve the pics or videos.

  • This article talks about 3 ways people are being spied on this Halloween time. One being a "stingray" a device that taps the phones of anyone in a certain radial distance around the device. It allows them to find out who, where and when you're talking to someone on the phone. And in some cases can even capture content of your conversation.Even if you are a person not suspected of a crime it will automatically tap into your phone with out notice as long as you are in proximity of the device that can be hidden in a van.
  • This is a very chilling thought that our privacy is being invaded without notice and even if we are not known suspects or criminals of a case. So what gives them the right to listen in on our conversations. And what if i accidentally say a keyword out of context and it appears on the governments front door and now they come to my house to investigate although i have nothing done wrong or anything.

  • Explains the scorecard posted by the EEF describing which apps and messaging tools are actually secure from data logging , etc.
  • I find this very helping to be able to know which apps to use and not to use, to feel more secure while talking to friends and family. And to know which companies actually follow through with their claims of being secure.
